Best Beaches in Koh Samui – Ranked by Type
🏖️ Chaweng Beach
Type: Most Popular & Developed
Vibe: Energetic, social, facilities-rich
Length: 7 km
Koh Samui's longest and most famous beach. White sand, clear water (in dry season), dozens of beach bars, water sports, and the full island infrastructure. The main Chaweng strip buzzes day and night.
- ✅ Best For: First-timers, those wanting max facilities, beach club fans
- ⚠️ Note: Can feel crowded Dec–Feb; road between beach and accommodation is busy
🏖️ Lamai Beach
Type: Second Most Popular
Vibe: Slightly quieter than Chaweng, still well-equipped
Length: 4 km
A crescent-shaped beach south of Chaweng with a similar range of hotels, restaurants, and activities but noticeably fewer crowds. Granny Rock (Hin Ta Hin Yai) – naturally shaped rock formations – is a quirky landmark nearby.
- ✅ Best For: Couples, those wanting Chaweng's facilities with fewer crowds
- ⚠️ Note: Slightly murkier water than some of the quieter northern beaches
🏖️ Bophut Beach & Fisherman's Village
Type: Charming & Boutique
Vibe: Romantic, boutique, excellent restaurants
Length: 3 km
The most charming area on Koh Samui. The old Fisherman's Village has preserved wooden shophouses now occupied by boutique restaurants, galleries, and small hotels. The Friday Walking Street market here is the best on the island.
- ✅ Best For: Couples, foodies, those who prefer character over party atmosphere
- ⚠️ Note: Beach itself is narrower and less impressive than Chaweng; fewer water sports
🏖️ Mae Nam Beach
Type: Quiet & Local
Vibe: Peaceful, residential, budget-friendly
Length: 5 km
Koh Samui's quietest long beach on the northern coast. Calm, shallow water excellent for swimming. Several excellent budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Far from the party areas.
- ✅ Best For: Long-stay travellers, families, budget travellers
- ⚠️ Note: Limited nightlife, restaurants, and activity options compared to Chaweng
🏖️ Choeng Mon Beach
Type: Exclusive & Calm
Vibe: Secluded, luxury, family-friendly
Length: 1.5 km
A small, sheltered bay in the northeast with the calmest swimming conditions on Koh Samui. Home to some of the island's best luxury resorts including Samui Tongsai Bay. Very little noise or development.
- ✅ Best For: Honeymooners, luxury travellers, families with young children
- ⚠️ Note: Far from most restaurants and activities; need transport to reach Chaweng
