Bangkok Royal Barge Procession 2026: November 6 Viewing Guide

••8 min read
Chao Phraya River in Bangkok

On Friday, November 6, Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River will host one of Thailand’s rarest ceremonial spectacles: the Royal Barge Procession for the Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Arun.

This is not a regular annual parade. The centuries-old formation brings together 52 ornate barges and around 2,200 Royal Thai Navy personnel, making it a major cultural occasion and a day when normal river travel will change.

Date, time and procession route

  • Date: Friday, November 6, 2026
  • Expected period: afternoon; arrive several hours early
  • Route: along the Chao Phraya toward Wat Arun
  • Formation: 52 barges across five columns, extending approximately 1,280 metres

The Royal Kathin ceremony involves the presentation of robes to Buddhist monks at Wat Arun. Visitors should treat the event as a religious and royal ceremony rather than entertainment.

Where can visitors watch?

Official guidance identifies viewing opportunities along both riverbanks between the Rama VIII Bridge area and Wat Arun. Reserved ticket areas were allocated earlier, so travellers without tickets should use only public spaces that remain open and follow instructions from security staff.

Potential areas include parts of Thonburi, Bangkok Noi and the older riverside districts north of Wat Arun. A river-view hotel may be convenient, but never assume its terrace has an unobstructed view—confirm directly with the property.

Arrive early

Choose one riverbank and stay there. Crossing the river close to procession time may be difficult, and the best public viewpoints will fill well before the barges appear.

Expect river and road disruption

Boat routes, pier access and roads near the river can be restricted before and during the ceremony. Do morning temple visits early, avoid scheduling an airport transfer through the Old Town that afternoon, and leave generous time for any dinner reservation.

  • Use MRT stations such as Sanam Chai or Itsaraphap, then walk only where permitted.
  • Do not rely on a cross-river ferry operating normally.
  • Carry water, but expect security screening and limited facilities.
  • Follow live instructions from Thai authorities on the day.

Read our Chao Phraya boat guide for normal river transport, while remembering the event-day plan will be different.

What to wear and how to behave

Wear modest, neat clothing in subdued colours. Stand when requested, keep noise low, never fly a drone, and do not enter controlled zones for a photograph. A small umbrella, sun protection, water and a charged phone are useful; large bags will only slow security checks.

Reconfirm before leaving

Ceremonial timing and access can change for security or weather. Check Tourism Authority of Thailand and Thai Government announcements on November 5 and again on the morning of November 6.
